Eight individuals were arrested during a tumultuous demonstration in downtown Toronto, with three of them allegedly assaulting police officers. The Toronto Police Union described the event as 'volatile', indicating a heated and potentially dangerous atmosphere. The demonstration took place at Nathan Phillips Square, near Queen Street West and Bay Street, around 2 p.m. on Saturday. According to the police, a large group of individuals participated in both the demonstration and a counter-demonstration, leading to a chaotic scene. The police attempted to maintain order, but some participants became aggressive, resulting in physical confrontations with officers. As a result, nine people were initially arrested, but one was later released without charges. The remaining eight face a total of 29 charges, which have not yet been proven in court. The accused include Mahnoor Mohyuddin, Jennifer Vong, Kyle Stephens, Woodrow Fraser-Boychuk, Abe Berglas, Darcy Belanger, Bryn Williams, and Charles Kaakee. The Toronto Police Association, representing 8,000 members, deemed the behavior of some participants 'completely unacceptable and disgusting'. They reported incidents of officers being pelted with eggs, toilet paper, and bags of urine, and one officer was punched. Despite these incidents, the association emphasized their commitment to facilitating peaceful demonstrations while condemning the violence. The police chief, Myron Demkiw, expressed solidarity with the officers, highlighting the dangerous situations they faced and the importance of their role in keeping the public safe.
