Evenepoel's dominance in the cycling world is undeniable. Just a day after leading Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe to a team time trial victory, he showcased his prowess in the Trofeo Serra Tramuntana, a road race in Mallorca. With a 50km solo attack, he left his competitors in the dust, solidifying his position as a force to be reckoned with in the new era of his career.
The Super Team Makeover
After his multi-million exit from Quick-Step, Evenepoel underwent a massive super team makeover in the winter. This transformation clearly paid off, as he dominated his first road race for the new squad. His rivals, Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard, should be on high alert.
"It's always good to win early after training for a few months," Evenepoel shared with Cycling Pro Net at the finish line. "I always like to win early in the season to feel good for the rest of it."
A New Winning Formula
Evenepoel's victory was a new twist on his signature winning formula. He attacked out of the Red Bull train on the climb of the Coll de Soler, leaving two riders in his wake on the descent. This display of bike handling panache was a testament to his newfound confidence.
As he approached the final climb, with a 30+ kilometer valley to navigate, it was clear that the race was over. Evenepoel's single chainring and refined bike fit propelled him to a 90-second lead within minutes. He crossed the finish line with a two-minute lead, looking rock-solid and immaculate.
A Strong Start for Red Bull
Red Bull's B-team dominated the race, controlling it from start to finish. Their mission was clear: to launch Evenepoel into solo orbit. Oliver Cookson, Red Bull's DS, praised the team's strategy and Evenepoel's clever ride, saying, "Chapeau to the whole team. The way Remco rode was really clever."
Looking Ahead
Evenepoel and his team are riding high after the winter overhaul. They now have their eyes set on the grand départ in July, where the true big beasts of bike racing will be waiting. With his second race win in as many days, Evenepoel is certainly off to a strong start.
"What a day for the team, and for Remco," Cookson smiled. "Now, we have to carry those good vibes all the way to July."
Evenepoel will race again on Saturday at the Trofeo Andratx-Pollença, the next installment of the Mallorca Challenge. His new sidekick, Florian Lipowitz, is also scheduled to compete. Will Evenepoel's dominance continue? Stay tuned and let us know your thoughts in the comments!
