NHS England is set to enhance the accuracy of the faecal immunochemical test (FIT) for bowel cancer detection, a move that could save hundreds of lives. This initiative aims to lower the threshold for blood detection in stool samples, bringing England's standards in line with those in Scotland and Wales. The current threshold of 120 micrograms of blood per gram of stool will be reduced to 80 micrograms by 2028, marking a significant advancement in early cancer detection. According to Prof. Peter Johnson, NHS England's national clinical director for cancer, this change will act as an improved early warning system, enabling earlier cancer detection and treatment, often before symptoms appear. Bowel cancer is a prevalent and deadly disease, with approximately 44,100 new diagnoses and 17,400 deaths annually in the UK. The risk factors, including processed meat consumption, overweight status, and alcohol intake, highlight the potential for prevention. Cancer Research UK estimates that over half of these cases could be avoided, emphasizing the importance of early detection. The FIT test, introduced in 2019, has already proven effective, with the NHS sending kits to nearly 7 million people in 2023-24, leading to the identification of 5,320 cancers. The new lower threshold is expected to further reduce late-stage diagnoses and deaths by around 6%, saving the health service an estimated £32 million annually. This improvement will result in the detection of 600 additional bowel cancers annually, an 11% increase, and a 35% rise in colonoscopies, the diagnostic test for high-risk patients. The government's new national cancer plan, to be unveiled on February 4th, World Cancer Day, will outline these changes, which have been welcomed by Bowel Cancer UK's CEO, Genevieve Edwards, as a significant step forward in the country's bowel cancer screening efforts.
