Matthew Lillard's Blunt Take: Was His Iconic 'Scream' Performance Actually 'Too Much'?
While legions of horror aficionados hold Matthew Lillard's portrayal of Stu Macher in the groundbreaking film "Scream" in high regard, the actor himself has offered a surprisingly candid and critical assessment of his younger self's work. He recently revealed that, in his own estimation, he might have been "doing too much" in the now-classic Wes Craven horror flick.
During a recent appearance on the "On Film…With Kevin McCarthy" podcast, the celebrated horror icon delved into his experience playing one of "Scream's" initial antagonists. He even shared that some of Stu Macher's most memorable lines were, in fact, improvised. However, Lillard couldn't shake the feeling that his performance had its shortcomings, specifically pointing to instances where he believes he overacted.
"I do think you see a young actor trying hard in every scene," Lillard confessed. "You know, doing too much. He’s chewing the scenery." This honest self-reflection took podcast host Kevin McCarthy by surprise, who questioned if Lillard truly viewed his performance that way, having lauded the actor as "brilliant" in the beloved movie.
Lillard, however, elaborated on his perspective, framing it within the context of the film's overall success. "I think what is brilliant is that [Craven] has crafted a perfect Jenga tower of performances," he explained. "Jamie Kennedy’s perfect. Neve Campbell’s perfect. W. Earl Brown’s perfect. Courteney Cox, Skeet Ulrich, all of them … have these moments. He got the right cast and the right script and the right, sort of, performances to build something in the moment that caught the zeitgeist."
But here's where it gets controversial: When specifically asked about the infamous "drooling of blood" scene at the film's climax, Lillard doubled down on his critique. "That’s Matt Lillard chewing scenery … That’s all Matt Lillard just being an idiot boy. That’s that thing like, doing too much." He emphasized that this was a conscious choice he now regrets as over-the-top.
And this is the part most people miss: Despite his critical view of his past performance, Lillard is gearing up for a return to the "Scream" universe! He's slated to reprise his role as Stu Macher in "Scream 7." The logline for this upcoming installment teases a chilling new threat: "When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the town where Sidney Prescott has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter becomes the next target."
The cast for "Scream 7" is set to include familiar faces like Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox, alongside new additions such as Isabel May, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Joel McHale. "Scream 7" is scheduled to hit theaters on February 27.
